Looking Good On Time

Have you ever pulled up at morning drop off and received a chipper wave from that mom? Mario_badescu The one who is radiating morning sunshine in a cute dress and slingbacks, hair coifed, and makeup perfected?  What is with that lady, anyway?  Let's face it, since having kids, time for our beauty routines has been chopped up significantly.  We don't always get to shower when we want to and we sometimes go to bed with our makeup on.  A quickie makeup job and a ponytail can work wonders to lift your spirits in the morning as you bounce out of the door with the tots!

Start with a moisturizer that contains sunscreen: Mario Badescu has a heap of great moisturizers for every skin type.  Moisture Magnet ($22 at Pout on Devine Street) contains SPF 15 and makes dry skin seem transformed.  Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 ($18.50 for 2.5oz) is also lauded as one of the best for all skin types and is easily absorbed.

Base, baby:
No one needs a foundation that will clog their pores and wreak havoc on their skin, especially when there's no guarantee that you'll have the energy to wash it all off before you go to bed.  There are some foundations out there that are actually good for you skin.  Alison Raffaele (which can be found at Pout on Devine Street) has recently reformulated all of her Skin products, which now bear her name.  Her new line is leaner and greener, with recyclable packaging, less plastic, and healthful mixtures.  Her Reality Base Foundation ($36.50) is completely free of parabens, talc, oils, glutens, and fragrances.  It is also fortified with an antioxidant complex that just feels so good on!  Another great foundation comes from Bare Escenctuals bareMinerals makeup (carried by Tonic Day Spa), which comes in powder form and are free of harmful chemicals.  This mineral makeup gives great coverage and makes your skin glow as though you've never had less than six hours of sleep.  It is also great because it eliminates the following step of adding powder over foundation, so it cuts back on your bathroom time even more!

Dust It:
Use a large powder brush to dust a loose face powder over the foundation.  Clinique's Gentle Light Powder ($22.50) evokes one word... PRETTY!  It contains little, tiny spaklies (undetectable on the face... we aren't in 9th grade anymore!) that manipulate the light to add some luminescence to your face.  Bobbi Brown's Sheer Finish Loose Powder ($32) gives a natural yet flawless look that doesn't contrast with the fact that you are wearing yoga pants and a tank top!  Both products can be found at Belk.

Eye Definition:
Line your eyes with a subtle and complimentary liner like Le Crayon Yeux by Chanel ($27.50, also available at Belk).  This liner comes with it's own sharpener and can go as fine or dramatic as you see fit.  Follow with a little Nars Mascara ($23.00) from Pout if you need it.

Make Me Blush:
Again, Bobbi Brown has pretty colors that go on looking natural instead of painted.  Nectar ($22.00) is a great shade for this time of year.  Pout also carries Chantecaille's Aquablush ($42.00), which has a neat firming aspect to it (and come on, once you've had a kiddo or two a little firming is never a bad thing!).

Don't forget your kisser!
Don't kiss your baby goodbye with dry lips!  Burt's Bees Beeswax Lipbalm ($3.00) makes your lips soft and smooth.  It's ingredients are all-natural and it can be found and most large retail stores.

There!  You're early morning makeup routine now takes less time than it did to read this post!  As for crazy-model-mommy... I'm stumped... she must have at least five live-in nannies or something!

Green is this season's "it" color, you know...

As if we haven't all been bombarded with the "Go Green" message, I'm here to continue the sentiment, as this is an issue that should have been at the forefront of our culture long ago.

Earth Day is Tuesday.  If you haven't jumped on the green bandwagon yet, Tuesday serves as a little reminder the get it done!  Living greener is healthier for our planet and our bodies, so this win-win should be a no brainer!  As mothers, it can seem that all we do is produce waste as we go through diapers, yogurt containers, snack packaging, juice boxes, etc. There are easy ways to reduce waste available to you.  For example, at Earth Fare and Publix stores reusable shopping bags are available for $1.99 and $.99, respectively.  Just one of those bags holds the equivalent of four plastic grocery bags, leaving less to roll around in the back of your car!  Besides, don't you get sick of opening your pantry and having a big ball of plastic grocery bags leap out at you twelve times a day?

If you are a gardener, composting will help those flowers grow!  Your excess food waste, such as the Cheerios that end up on the floor, banana peels, apple rinds, and any uneaten food that would go in the garbage disposal, will do everyone better in the composting bin.  The nutrients from compost will make your garden soil rich and productive.  Check Earth Fare for their large bins, recently listed at $189.99.

Switch to compact flourecent light bulbs.  Changing just eight of them in your home can reduce your power bill and the amount of carbon emitted from your home into the atmosphere.  CFL bulbs can be found at most large retail stores.

Reusable containers are best, for the environment and your family.  Always use reusable water bottles, coffee mugs, food containers, etc.  Be wary of plastic drink containers, though, as warnings are increasing about the possibility of the chemicals leaching into your liquid (check out this link for a recent NYTimes article)  This week I even bought a Sigg bottle for my 18-month-old (also at Earth Fare, $15.99).  They are pricier, but made of more durable non-plastic, alleviating any plastics wariness in the back of my mind.  My little guy loves it, too!

On that note, Pea Pie reader Helen reminded me this morning about the baby bottle plastic scare.  She said that she found Born Free BPA-free bottles at Babies R Us this weekend.   Prices range from $9.99 for a 5 ounce bottle to $53.99 for a six-pack of 9 ounce bottles, according to the website.

One last soap-box item... tell your city and county council representatives that our recycling program needs improvement!  Too many of our recyclables (such as those Yo Baby yogurt containers) are not accepted by the program.  Only two types of plastic are acceptable, and boxes and cardboard are a no-no.  We can do better!

Have a Happy Earth Day!

The Itchies!

Last summer, my son developed a bad case of the scalies on his upper arms.  After learning that it was eczema, I have become pretty vigilant about what types of products come into contact with his skin.  The cause of eczema isn't really known, but after speaking with our pediatrician and doing a little reading, we deduced that there may be a link to my own allergic conditions, which include dry skin, severe seasonal allergies, and asthma.  We also noticed that certain materials that we would wear would cause his skin flare into a bright red when he came into contact with them.  After chatting further with our pediatrician and with friends, I started using the following tips, and breakouts have slowed down considerably:

- Switch to perfume-free, non drying bath products for your child.  We use Mustela's Stelatopia line which can be found at specialty stores such as Urban Nirvana.  Regular soap can be drying, but many other bath products also contain sodium lauryl sulfate, a substance used to produce lather which also strips oils from the skin.

- Smear Aquaphor over your child after every bath.  It doesn't make putting their jammies on any easier, but it packs in a lot of moisture.  It can also be used for diaper rash and other skin irritations.

- Use perfume-free, dye-fee laundry products.  All, Seventh Generation, Method, and Tide all have free and clear lines, and Bounce even has dye-free, perfume-free dryer sheets.  Sometimes I do miss the slight scent of detergent when I pull a shirt on, but it's definitely worth it.

- Now that we are in (and out, and in again, and out again) the midst of outdoor play season, protect skin with a chemical free sunscreen.  Blue Lizard is my personal favorite (and is carried by Blue Moon Outfitters), but Burt's Bees and California Baby also come highly recommended.  Use small dollops... a little goes a long way!

- Use a natural bug repellent.  In Columbia, where we are outnumbered by mosquitoes during warm months, making ourselves invisible to them is a must.  Products like Burt's Bees Herbal Insect Repellent are great alternatives to others which contain DEET.  The smell is a bit strong at first, as the formulation contains aromatic herbs such as rosemary oil and lemon grass.  However this product is also great on dry skin.  It is an oil spray, so it takes some rubbing in.

- Dump the synthetic fibers.  Materials such as polyester and nylon are known to irritate eczema-prone skin.  Itchy wool should also be avoided.  Instead, opt for natural and/or organic fibers like cotton and silk for clothing and bedding.

Tips such as these have helped keep my son's skin better hydrated in a world of chemicals and irritants.  With green living on the forefront of our pop culture (and it's about darn time!), products free of skin-drying irritants are more easily accessible.  If your child has sensitive or eczema-prone skin, keep your eye out for the products listed above and even more that are sure to come to market in the coming months!

Artful escapes

The first six months with your newborn are one of nature's great bonding experiences.  The two of you spend endless hours nursing, feeding, cooing, and cuddling together at home.  Mom and babe get to know each other in ways that no one else can.  If you are like me, though, your life pre-baby was go, go, go.  The day before I went into the hospital to give birth I was zooming around town like a madwoman; attending meetings, chatting with friends, having lunch out, and shopping.  While I was blessed to have an immediate bond with my sweet little boy, the sudden  halt to my million-mile-a-minute lifestyle left me a little bewildered.  Once I came out of the complete fog of the first eight weeks, I needed a chance to get out every once in a while.  Below are some great nanoescapes for new mom and baby!

Fountain_day_3

-The Columbia Museum of Art: Load up the stroller and head to the corner of Main and Hampton.  The quiet atmosphere won't over stimulate baby, and you can peruse the current exhibition, Excavating Egypt: Great Discoveries from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, University College London.  Included are jewelry and fashions of the times, busts, and even an amazing coffin (who knew the Egyptians were so short?).  While  you are there, head upstairs to look at the Kress Collection, which includes works by Botticelli and Crespi.

- Starbucks: Admit it. Your internet time has increased exponentially since baby entered your life.  You should be sneaking in naps when he dozes, but instead you are hammering away at your keyboard.  Why not take that activity out?  Pack up your laptop, diaper bag, and infant carrier and head for a Grande Chai Latte and some Wi-Fi.  Your little one can coo and snooze while you answer your email.

Walk the Devine Mile:  Okay, it's not quite a mile, but on a beautiful day a stroll past (and into) the shops on Devine Street will certainly lighten you mood, and the fresh air will put a tiny smile on your little sweet pea's face (or gas... whatever works).

- Lunch With The Girls: Take advantage of your baby's portability now, because when he is walking and gabbing and discovering how to throw, a leisurely lunch will become more of a rarity!  Besides, everyone wants a lunch date with a sweet, gurgling bundle of joy!

Life in this slowed down lane is full of amazement, and experiencing activities with your baby will help you to relax and step outside of your box.  Be creative as you work around your child's schedule and  you will both be happier for it!
